III. Daily Focus in the New Year Maintaining energy and focus is one of the great human and business dilemmas. As a matter of fact, energy and focus are intrinsically connected. If your efforts are unfocused, you will lose energy. Conversely, if you have little energy, your efforts will tend to be unfocused, and you will have difficulty reaching goals. Right away, one notices the vicious cycle to avoid in the New Year. DON'T expend extensive energy on vague goals. DO focus your goals so your energy is renewed and effective as you progress. Did anyone ever mention to you to establish a "niche" in your business life (a skill/service in which you specialize and will therefore be sought out for)? When asked to identify a niche, you are being encouraged to focus and energize.

When you actually establish a niche, you are not only focusing and energizing, you are also creating an expectation that you will build your potential/business in this area. As we know, creating positive expectations creates results. Have you ever instead of establishing some specialty areas, had "many irons in the fire" only to find you were exhausted and confused? You were experiencing goal diffusion and energy leaks! Even if you are committed to being a "generalist" rather than a specialist, you still need focus. In personal life, working parents often experience the overload, which comes from trying to do many things well. Many of you know the results of trying to be super-parent: fatigue, guilt, dissatisfaction, a sense of 'not doing anything as well as I'd like to.' In work life, managers often try to follow many projects closely, only to experience the same overload, dissatisfaction, and in this case supervisees who feel disempowered by all that project scrutinizing. Coaching clients who have management challenges, are in career transition, or are self-employed often have the same concerns. Focus is not just for the business area of one's life; we need focus for our whole life.

IV. Focus in the New Year, as a daily habit, promises greater peace of mind, energy and goal attainment. Focus will involve doing by having a plan and: dropping, delaying, decreasing or delegating some tasks. Notice now if dropping, delaying, decreasing or delegating stirs anxiety for you. Four possible blocks/anxieties you may experience before actually acting on these 4 D's are: 1) Dropping - fear of closing one door in order to open another. 2) Delaying - fear of procrastinating. 3) Decreasing - fear of lowering your standards in some areas. 4) Delegating - fear of relinquishing control.

Now notice that each of these focus helpers actually involves your personal faith and a tremendous pay off. Take the - drop, delay, decrease, delegate - leap as this leap year commences! Dropping what distracts you the most from your primary focus - Nature (God) abhors a vacuum. When we close one door, another door really does open up. Delaying in order to keep focus on a priority task - pastor Robert Schuler has frequently written that God tells us either, "Yes, No or Slow." Delaying is simply your slow response. Delaying can be viewed as going slow now to go fast later. Delaying is really NOT procrastination. Procrastination actually tends to occur when we expect perfection, and therefore postpone endlessly with the belief that one way our efforts will appear perfect (did you notice it is not possible to be perfect, nor to get started with perfection?). Starting efforts are supposed to be far from perfect. Decreasing - is consciously adjusting (yes lowering) your expectations in some areas, so you can increase your energy and focus for excellence in another area. This means pick your battles, pick your priorities, and enjoy your life. Don't just work at improving your life, "play" at improving your life, as you have less to do, and are doing less with excellence. Decreasing is very different for each client, for some decreasing means a somewhat dirtier house in order to complete more work projects and have more family time. For others, decreasing means giving up their own lower paying clients, in order to specialize in services which bring in more income. Delegating is relinquishing your control over others, so they can reach their full potential in assisting you. Delegating is a skill exercised with balance. There is tremendous value in giving others enough autonomy to be creative and effective. There is also great merit in being clear enough when we delegate. With clear communication, common goals are well defined, and ways to monitor progress are built in. I once over-delegated my billing. One client's billing was out of balance, because his ability to monitor billing had not been well established. Once monitoring was established, bill delegation was effective again, and much better handled than if he had done it himself!

Now that you are taking the leap to remove the blocks to your focus, your priorities will emerge. (to download a free copy of the building energy and focus with the 4 D's, ..) Plan now to set some time aside to write down your long-term goals, and the short-term objectives to reach them. A mission and/or vision statement, followed by a strategic plan is very important to staying the course with your focus. Refer to past newsletters, for help with this, or call for a coaching consultation.

V. Seed Thoughts For now, act on removing your blocks, and jumpstarting your energy by determining and focusing on your "Power of Three." Take three deep breaths, and slowly exhale, letting each exhale be a bit longer than your inhale. Then ask yourself, 'What three skills or activities do I most excel at?' or 'What three skills or activities most absorb me and bring me joy?' Also ask yourself, 'what would I do if I suddenly had unlimited income?' Your answers will include your power of three. For follow up, ask others "Which three activities/skills do you see me as carrying out with excellence?"

One client's power of three was: reading and disseminating information to others, facilitating group meetings, and helping others improve their people skills. As a clinical director at a chemical dependency treatment program, she began to emphasize these 3 areas in her work life. She made a greater effort to pass along important information in a useful format, she turned her team meetings into "work meetings" in which there was an emphasis on products useful to the treatment program, and became more involved in helping others with people/counseling skills. She made sure to manage her other work duties carefully, and delegated as many tasks as possible which were not in her "power of three", still ensuring that she could monitor progress. She found that her energy, productivity, and work satisfaction increased greatly, and that a sense of shared team responsibility also resulted in her work environment. She particularly enjoyed leading a team, which had a good attitude about meetings, because they appreciated that their meetings had tangible work products, which improved their effectiveness as treatment program counselors.
